The Protectionist Union having failed to induce the candidato for the Paddington election to retiro in favor of the candidate chosen by the Union, have thrown up the contest. There arc now half-a-doaen candidates in tho field.

MELBOURNE, January 5.
Ninety-nine nominations have been received for the Newmarket Handicap, and forty-seven for the Australian Cup. Nelson is nominated for the Cup.
VICTORIA'S GOLD YIELD. MELBOURNE, January 5. The gold export last year shows a decrease of 23,0000z on the previous year.

Messrs Clarko and Braddort, M.L.A., have been appointed to th« Federal Council in place of Messrs Brown and Dodds.
RAILWAY ACCIDENT,
ADELAIDE, January 5,
An engine and ten trucks fell over a washed-out embankment on the Northern Railway, and were considerably damaged. The passenger carriages remained on the rails.
