SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

THE AUCKLAND RACES

Third Day—Tuesday

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Steeplechase day was a success in every way. ' The weather was all that could be desired. The attendance was very large, numbering fully 7,000, while the racing was uniformly good and the fields numerous. Interest of course centred in the Steeplechase, and those who journeyed out to Ellerslie were rewarded with seeing a magficent race an! a desperate finish. There was some trouble on weighing out, owing to Silvio's jockey being changed at the last moment, and the mount was taken from Warren and given to Russell. The latter scaled 4£lb over weight, and this difference probably occasioned Silvio's defeat. Uranus, by winning both hurdle races and the Steeplechase, emulated the example set by Alaric three years ago. In the Victoria Handicap Tetford scored his first win since meeting with his accident on being shipped to Napier after his Wanganui Cup win in 1885. The following events were contested after your report closed yesterday :

AUCKLAND STEEPLECHASE, a hmdicip cf 300 bovs, added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs each ; the second horse to receive 60 fovs, and tho third horse 20 sovs from the stakes. About three miles and a half. Mr Tdtham'a b « Uranus, by Blair Athol—dam by Day Dawn, 10it (Tr.win) 1 Mr D. Moloney's ch g Si"vio, lOst 101b (carried list Jib) (Russell) 2 Mr W. Lnanasd's Falcon, 10st 71b .. (Rae) 3 Mr D. O'Brien's Isaac, list .. .. (Ilickey) 0 Mr J. Marshall's Magnesia, 10it 3!b .. (Nolan) 0

Betting: 2 to 1 against Uranus, 3 to 1 Silvio and Isaac.

When tho flag was lowered Silvio and Magnesia were the first to get on to their legs, and as they took the first jump Silvio was just clear of Magnesia; Isaac being third, with Uranus last. Running up the hill, Magnesia drew up in front of Silvio, and when they came in sight from behind the trees she was seen leading Silvio by four lengths ; Isaac being next, close up, Falcon fourth, and Uranus still last. The first post - and - rail fence was safely negotiated by all but tho second one. Magnesia ran off, and Silvio took command, he and Isaac being quite close together aa they raced at the stonewall at the entrance to the course, Uranus being now fourth. At the stonewall Isaac and Silvio were still together, with Falcon and Uranus lying well up, while the field was whipped in by Magnesia. Hickey took a pull at Silvio as they raced at the water, and Silvio got over the obstacle about a length in front; but a little further on Isaac was again on terms, and he led Silvio a length and a half up the back, with Falcon third and Uranus fourth. The positions were not altered gieatly till they came from hehind the trees, where Falcon, to the surprise of ;U, was seen leading Isaac, with Silvio next and Uranus well up. Falcon and Isaac cleared the stone wall together just in front of Silvio, while Uranus appeared to be in trouble, and the cry "The favorite is beaten " was raised. At the sod wall Isaac had separated himself from Falcon, and he got over a length in front. No alteration took place over the double ; but as they raced at the water-jump under the trees, Uranus and Silvio made a run at the leader, and all three were on terms when they lauded. At tho next hurdle Uranus got his head in front of Silvio, and Isaac began to fall away evidently beaten. Up the hill the excitement was intense, and as Silvio drew up to the favorite at the post-and-rail fence the cheering from the stands increased ; but as they came down the hill again, Uranus secured the lead, being a good length in front, and they took the stone wall leading on to the course proper. Entering the straight it seemed to be all over ; but at the last hurdle Silvio came with a great bound, and a desperate race between the two up the straight resulted, Uranus getting home half a length to the good all out. Falcon was third, four lengths off; Isaac and Magnesia some distance off. Time, Bmin 4sec. Dividends, L2 17s and L2 lis.
