(Received January 8,1888, at 2.10 a.m.) The Grafton Regatta took place to-day, and resulted as follows:—Searle, 1; Nelson, 2 ; Hearn, 3. The race was a splendid one. The winner had seven lengths start, and Nelson gained half a length at a jump, but rowed himself to a standstill. Searle was expected to collapse every moment, and level money was laid on Hearn; but 200 yards from home tlie latter had spurted himself out. Nelson came again; but Searle held his own and won by two lengths, Hearn being the same distance behind Nelson. Hanlan waß too unwell to start, but gave an exhibition of rowing with Searle over the last half of the course, and came in first. This led to an impression amongst the onlookers that Hanlan had started, and bets were paid on him, and several fights took place in consequence. Nelson won the Skiff Handicap. [From Oor Own Correspondent.] Glorious weather, fair fields, and a capital attendance were the features of the second day's racing in connection with the Auckland Racing Club's annual meeting. The Cup race produced a field of seven, but Nelson was made a red hot favorite, all the men belonging to the Squadron backing him as he bore the same name as the Admiral's vessel. Despite his great impost, Nelson succeeded in securing his third successive Cup. The win was an unparalleled performance. Clogs ran a good race, but Sextant was evidently not himself. The start for the Newmarket Handicap was a straggling one, and the Hon. E. Mitchelson, owner of Formo, was so disgusted at the way that his horse was again started that he immediately resigned his position as steward. There was some questionable riding in the Selling Hurdles Race, and the stewards decided to meet on the following morning to investigate the matter. The following aro the results : NEW YEAR'S HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 100 sovs, with a sweepstako of 3 sovs each to go to tho second horso. Two miles. Shillolagh. and Sirloin raced over the second obstacle almost oh terms, and passing the stand they still led the field by three lengths. Peter Osbeck was the first to cry a go. When half a mile, from home. Uranus had taken second place, Sirloin dropping away beaten. Shillelagh and Uranus were on even terms at the hurdle Bearing the home turn, but when fairly in the straight the Napier representative drew away and ran home the easiest of winners by two lengths, Coral being fivo lengths away from Shillelagh. Sirloin finished fourth, and The Don fifth. Isaac ran very unkindly throughout, and never was in the front division. Time, 3min 7£see. Dividends, L 6 16s and L 6 3s. After one break away Mr Stephens despatched the field to a splendid start. The colors of Friendship were the first to become conspicuous, the most prominent of the others being Sextant aud Cannon ; Nelson and Victoria heing next, with Clogs and Leoriua last. Friendship, who was pulling double, 1 led Cannon by a length round the bottom turn, Brown holding Nelson back. A little further on Friendship surrendered the lead to Cannon, and at this point Leorina stumbled, dislodging her rider. Nelson was interfered with by this mishap and lost threo or four lengths. Cannon and Clogs raced on torms as the field approached the cutting, Nelson and Friendship beint; together a length in the rear. Clogs and Cannon passed the half-mile post in company, but the former was tho first to turn into the straight, and passing the stand (half the distance) she had two lengths

advantage of Victoria and Cannon; Friendship and Nelson being next, and Sextant last. Rounding the turn Clogs was still in the van, with Cannon and Victoria as her rarest attendants, At this point Nelson commenced to ,gp through his horses, and.by the time the .putting was reached he was :nly a .length, behind Clogs : Friendship being thirds apd. Sextant, who began to majie his effort, fourth. Half a mile from home Nelson was. alongside Clogs, and ho passed her without even the semblance of a struggle, a loud cheer proclaiming the favorite's victory. Sextant here put in bis claim, and momentarily looked dangerous, for he actually got on terms with Clogs, but died away very quickly.
