BENEVOLENT TRUSTEES.

The weekly meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs Solomon I chairman), Calder, Rennie, Carroll, and Fagan. Accounts amounting to L7l 12s lOd were passed for payment, A donation of fifty copies of the * Witness’ for distribution amongst the inmates of the Institution was acknowledged with thanks. The Chairman stated that two eighteen gallon kegs of beer had been received for the Institution—one from Messrs Speight and Co., and the other from Mr Joel. One keg had been used on Christmas Day, and it was intended to use the other on New Year’s Day. It was decided that Messrs Speight and Joel be thanked for their gifts. Mr Rennie, however, expressed the opinion that it was most inconsistent of the Trustees to accept the beer at all. It having been reported that three of the Inmates had left the Institution and had not returned, it was decided not to admit them again until they made fresh application. A discussion took place with reference to the case of William M‘Kitterick, who had some children in the Institution, and it was resolved that, as he had long neglected to pay the amount promised for the children’s maintenance, the secretary be instructed to have them removed. The case of Mrs Cotter came up for consideration. It appeared that she had six children and had been in receipt of 10s a week from the Trustees. The police, however, reported that she kept a disreputable house frequented by women of ill-fame, and that her children were often sent to the public-house for beer. The Chairman also said that the woman’s neighbors had complained that it was a grossly Improper thing for her to be receiving aid from the Institution. After some consideration, It was decided to continue the woman’s allowance for a fortnight, on the understanding that the Trustees would discontinue it if they heard any more bad reports about her. A number of other applications for relief were also dealt with.
