NEW GUINEA.

[By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] [Reuter's Telegrams.] SYDNEY, December 28. (Received December 28,1887, at 12 60 p.m.) Mr Bevan, leader of the expedition formed in Sydney for exploring New Guinea, has returned to Thursday Island. He reports the result of their labors as a brilliant geographical success. The expedition explored the river system: running into the Gulf of Papua over an area of 10,000 miles of new territory, but were compelled to return owing to half of the men of the party being down with fever. Personally Mr Bevan is desirous of recommencing the exploration if the necessary funds are provided, the last expedition having confirmed his former discoveries.
