CITY POLICE COURT. (Before Messrs J. Elmer and E. Paterson, J.P.s.) Robbery and Assault.— Edward Arthur was charged with having, on the 26th inst., robbed and aesaulted Lung Chin Wah. Mr B. L. Stanford defended. Lung Chin Wah Baid he was a Chinese doctor, residinp in Walker street, in a right-of-way at the back of the Royal Hotel. On the night of the 26th accused was standing near the right-of-way, and as witness passed down accused called to him "Oome here," but he did not reply, whereupon accused caught him by the hand and presented an open knife, at the same time demanding money. Witness was afraid, and gave him ninopence, whereupon he said it was not enough, and struck witness twice on the side of the head, and (finally knocked him down. While upon the ground accused put his hand into witness's pocket, and took out Is 9d. Another Chinaman then came up, and witness asked him to go for the sergeant. Accused attempted to assault the other Chinaman, who was too much for him. A constable came up, and witness gave accused in charge.— Charley Fue said he Baw the accused holding Lung Chin Wah down by the hand, and then saw the prosecutor offer money to the accused ; but the latter would not tike it, saying that he wanted more. Prisoner was on the top of the prosecutor.— Chum Chin heard the prosecutor call out: "Someone rob me of my money. Police! Police ! " Witness went up to the accused and asked what was the matter. Accused then attempted to assault witness and afterwards ran away. "Witneeß followed him, and be ran. into the back part of the bar of the hotel. Witness asked the young lady there if she knew the accused. Witness was certain that accused was the man who committed the assault.—Constable Christio said that on telling accused he would have to go to tho police station he attempted to bolt. He had given the name of Johnston. The prosecutor had pointed tho accused out in a orowd as the man who had assaulted and robbed him.—Accused was oommittcd for trial.-r-Mr Stanford asked for light bail.—Sergeant-major Bevin objected, as tho oharge was a serious one.—Bail was fixed at LIOO for prismer's own surety, and two sureties of LSO each. Bt-law Casks.— Thomas Godfrey, allowing a horse to wander, was fined 2s (id, without costs.— Daniel Knox, keeping unregistered dogs (two charges), was fined U and costs. William Roberts, for tho same offence, (two charges), was also fined Is and costs in each case.— Robert Come was fined 2s 6d, wjthout costs.—The case against John Myers was withdrawn. Assault.—James M'Caffrejr charged * John Connor and his wife with having, on the' 24th, assaulted Mary M'Caffrey; and, as a cross case, John Connor charged Mary M'Caffrey with assaulting him by hitting him over tho head with a goose. Mr Gallaway appeared for Mr M'Caffrey *JMr Stanford for Oonjaor.—-After evidence had been taken the case was adjourned until next Wednesday to obtain the testimony' of Dr Fergusson as to the extent of Mrs M'Cat frey's injuries.
