BRIEF MENTION.

At the Port Chalmers Police Court to-day James Stevens \vas fined 10s for being drunk on the railway line. John Pringle, stepson of ‘ Mr Scott, farmer, of Otepopo, was found dead near his parents’ residence on Sunday night. He had gone out to wash himself, and is supposed to have died from heart disease. He was twenty-six years old. Between 3,000 and 4,000 persons travelled on the railways in the Qamaru district yesterday. ' Some good dividends were paid at the Tradesmen’s races at Oamaru yesterday. Belladonna won the Boxing Day Handicap and paid L 7 ; Silver Prince won ‘the Trot and paid Ll3; Forester paid LIO in the Hack Race ; and in the final race of the day over L2O was paid on Go-Bang. Lord Randolph Churchill is “doing ” the Russian capital. The Sydney races had to be postponed on account of the bad weather. Pasha is favorite for the principal event.
