A FEW QUESTIONS FOR "AUSTRALIAN."

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l often notice letters in your pßjier from "Australian," and seeing that he takes the side of the Freetraders, I should like to ask him a few questions : First, which Colony has the greater resources New South Wales or Victoria? Second, which is the more prosperous of the two ? If Victoria has greater resources than New South Wales, then there is no wonder that the papers speak.of her great prosperity, whilst they give gloomy accounts of her elder sister (New South Wales), which enjoys all the blessings of Freetrade. But if, on the other hand, New South Wales has the greater amount of resources, then a difficulty arises which I should like "Australian " to explain—how it is that Victoria is tho more prosperous of the two places, seeing that New South Wales has the larger working population ? Another question I should like to ask is this: Has Viotoria greater resources than New Zealand ? lam under the impression that this Colony has quite as many resources as any in the Australian group, and yet we have a cry of dull times from Auckland to the Bluff. If Hie Freetrade policy is the better, how is it that the most protected colony is the most, prosperous? If " Australian " will answer these questions, he will greatly oblige An Inquirer. Dunedin, December 22.
