CORRESPONDENCE.

THE DUNEDIN CENTRAL ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, The letter which appears in your columes of Saturday night, bearing tho signature of “John If. Gay,” is a misstatement of facts and misleading in its character. At Mr Cargill’s first meeting be answered all tho questions which 1 handed to him. A f.w dozens cf (jiicsiionfi in writing were handed to ms as chairman, and I was p*ssing them on to Mr Cargill one at a time until, when it was about ten o’ch ck. and I saw the audience begin to retire, I remarked that there were still a great number of papers, some ef th m containing questions of a very personal character, and that I would not band him any more. The balance of the questions Mr Cargill never saw, and I do not think that the question Mr Gay bays ho refused to answer was among them. If it was I did not see it. If Mr Gay is so very desirous ol catechising Mr Cargill, why has ho not ths manliness to do so in person ? At his third meeting Mr Cargill never refused to answer any question. lie however asked tho audience to stand up and put their questions “ like wen ” and not to hind them in wri'ing. Only one question w’ns asked and answered. Every opportunity was given for further questioning, but nothing was forthcoming. I am of opinion your correspondent is only trying to mislead.-1 am, etc., John B. Thomson, Chairman of Committee and ol first meeting. Dunedin, September 5.
