DU.VRDIN CRNTR A.L ELECTION.
to tup. editor. Sir,—MrTlii'Uc is in error. Tae general impression is not so mufsh that th.:ro is <•■ probat'lity of bis rlirii!', nsth-.G he will he exce-edir.gly f-.oliali if ho il;-,ns not retire. Why should a man court <ift 7 Mr Hodge poses as'be champion of Profcec-ti.-.n, ".'id co<Vl.' tells us in effect that ihe.'only hope of ■'rotec ion in New Zealand lies in his return. Could presumption further go? ~ .. , . After listening to his addresses on the subject, i would remark that if Protection is bound up with Mr Hodge, so much the worse for ProtcMon.-I am, etc., One of tub Protection Lbaoub. Eunedin, August 13.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-I have read with disgust the letter of il Lethaby in last night's Star. At *he l»rt Cenli' J election he was a bitter opponent of Mr Bracken s. Had wo not then detiils enough of private coi\creations'Orare the same disgraceful t.ctics to be again u°edl against Dr Fitcliett? There are some men so tart fcellnpr. that they aroewr to publish anv private convention or gossip, if they think \- will serve their enrpose. Wo have hid quite enough of this in'tne gast, andll trust Pr Fitch<U will have tho good sense to treat H. Letnauj 8 effusion with the contempt it merits. Mr Lethaby is great in getting up requisitions. Ask him to get up a requisition for you, and he is your friend; neglect this, and nothing can save you from his iu;t anger. Hero is whero Dr Fitchelt eired ; ho should have asked the high prifst for a requisition, and oil would have been well. Witness his bantlings for Dunedin South. Dunedin Central and candidates he can mention himself. Tho electors cf Dunedin Central will judge for themaelve9 the relative abilities cf Dr Fitehett and Mr Hodge ; and not all tho noise and emptiness of " H. Lethaby" will save his bantling from the verdict.—l am, etc., Excblsior. Dunedin, August IS.
