AN EXPLANATION.

TO TIIK KDITOK.

Sir,—Among the “Election Notes” in this morning’s issue of the ' Otago Daily Times’ a report of a “numerously-attended meeting" at Green Island is given. As the report is somewhat misleading, and certainly puts me In a false position, I beg through you to take the earliest opportunity of questioning its accuracy.

I was asked on Saturday evening to come over to the Council Chambers. On my arrival there I was duly voted to the chair; and then I asked, and tor the first time learnt, the purpose of the meeting. The meeting was called by Ur William Thomson, who wishes to represent this district tu the next Parliament. As this affects the public welfare of the borough, whose chief officer I am, I presided at the meeting, but my position was entirely official. I, with several others, left before the business of the meeting was concluded. -1 am, etc., James Miller. Green Island, August 8.
