THE TAIERI ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—At his meeting at Greytown on Saturday last Mr Carncross was much concerned lest tho electors should sign a requisit’on now being got up to bring out an able working man’s representative. Now, I cannot see why wc should bo forced to accept either Mr Carncross or the late member. Many of us care very little for either of them ; and, if we are to have no choice, it is of little consequence to us how tho voting may go. But why should we be prevented from hearing others and selecting tho ablest man ? Surely Mr Carncross would not object to this. And, if another candidate holding our views is likely to obtain more votes, I feel sure Mr Carncross would retire at once in favov of the one who would be of most use to the district. Many of us feel that Mr Carncross is scarcely tho man to fill tho position, and if a really good man were to the front he could count on good support. But working men, for various reasons, do not like to sign requisitions. We are cautious about committing ourselyos jto support a man before we have heard his views; and these papers come under the eyes of our masters, and sometimes the names are printed, and working men cannot affoid this. Mr Carncross must not think because we attend his meetings and listen patiently to his speeches that we are content with him to represent us, to the exclusion of all other candidates, Wc are at present in the position of a vacant charge seeking for a pastor: we have a vacant pulpit, and should be willing to try all comers until we find the best man. This is the common sense position, and I was much surprised to hear Mr Carncross speaking against this. I hope, however, it will not prevent those who have this matter in hand from bringing out a suitable working man’s candidate.—l am, etc., A Working Man. Mosgiel, August 3.
