THE AFGHAN TROUBLES.

Reports to hand from Afghanistan prove that continuous fighting is taking place between the Ameer's troops and the rebels, but the accounts of the various engagements and success on either side are most conflicting.

LONDON, June 30. (Reoeived July 1,1887, at 11.30 a.m.) The Imperial Government have agreed to undertake the survey of the route proposed for the Pacific cable, but the work can only be carried on as vessels are available. The decision recently given in the case Magnus v. the Queensland Bank excites attention amongst bankers and brokers. The cordiality of the reception of the Premier in Ireland is increasing.

The Committee of the House of Commons which was appointed to inquire into the feasibility of State-aided colonisation have sent in a report, in which they propose that the Government should assist private colonisation schemes by guaranteeing interest on loans raised for that purpose. Everything is ready for laying the foun-dation-stone of the Imperial Institute on Monday. A block of colonial granite, contributed by ladies, will be laid; also Indian stones and English bricks. Representatives from different parts of the Empire will be present at the opening ceremony. Earl Salisbury received a deputation against sugar bounties. The third operation on the Crown Prince has been more succesful, and the medical reports are reassuring. Mr Bryce has given notice in the House of Commons of a question as to the position of the New Hebrides negotiations, and whether Government expect a withdrawal of the French troops from the island. It is reported that the Sobranje will elect Prince Ferdinand of.Coburg to the Bulgarian Throne.
