OUR GAOLS.

to fiik tebitofe. Sir,—As Government officers are (and very properly so too) not allowed t > defend themselves iu the public papers, will you allow me to suggest to your correspondent “ Historians ” the advocacy of making all Justices of the Peace visiting Justices of gaols, with power to question officers and examine records. The writer at the Dunedin Gaol inquiry some few years since suggested “ that the more the public knew of the working of their gaols, tho better it would be for all interested.” In this tho Commissioners and the Inspector (Captain Hume) heartily concurred and acquiesced. Why this principle has been overlooked one is at a loss to undeistand,—l am, etc., Fredk. Mallard. Dunedin, June 7.
