William Gooclser, of the firm of Goodser and Co., timber merchants, Newcastle (N.S.W.), has mysteriously disappeared from his home. He has been greatly depressed in spirits lately, owing, it is thought, to financial embarrassment. The young man Henry Lancaster, convicted of the manslaughter of J. J. M. King, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, The accused shot King after the latter had severely maltreated him. A warrant has just been issued for the arrest of Luscombe Searelle on a charge of fraudulent insolvency at Sydney. It is stated that Searelle, a few days ago, took passage per the s.s. Sydney for Loudon; and his wife, his sister, and child, and her aunt left for Europe on Monday last. Walker and Co., of the Melbourne Steam Biscuit Factory, were charged with using poisonous ingredients in the manufacture of biscuits. It was clearly shown that a workman had obtained from an adjoining factory some bright green color, about the chemical properties of which he knew nothing, and used it in the biscuits. Some strong comments were made by the Bench, and the defendants were fined L2O, with L 3 3s costs. A fatal affray occurred at the Welcome Creek, fifty miles from Cooktown, on the Palmer Railway. The quarrel commenced between Robert Autlett (aged twenty-one) and Benjamin Melton (aged nineteen), and resulted in a stand-up fight for several rounds. Autlett had the worst of it, and sat down to rest. In a few minutes he fell over dead, Melton has been arrested on a charge of murder. Four hundred and thirty-eight shareholders in the Commercial Bank of South Australia ask the liquidators not to take action against the late directors, to avoid litigation, and to wind up the bank affairs without loss of time or resort to litigation of any kind.
