THE C.J.C. MEETING.

[By Pegasus.]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 11,

There are no scratchings so far, and no material alteration in the betting, except that Marion has superseded Fair Nell, and is now second favorite to Hermitage. I fancy the race lies between these three, but I prefer Hermitage. Maxim’s chance for the Champagne has not been improved by his intended rider, Rudings, being thrown from a trap on Saturday and injured so much as to most likely prevent him riding during this meeting. At the Wellington races on Saturday the Tradesmen’s Stakes, of 50 sovs, one mile, was won by Giriri (8.2), with Voltigeur (7.10) second, and The Shah (9.11) third. Won by three lengths. Time, Imin 47|sec. Dividend, LS 13s. The Ladies’ Bracelet, of 20 sovs, one mile and a-quarter, was won by Deceiver (10.13), Kangaroo being second, and Fabrication an indifferent third. The quickest lieatin the JosephßanksSheffield Handicap, at Sydney, last month, was that in which Geddes put Monaghan down. It was run in 13sec. Geddes is very young, and has yet to develop staying qualities. He has been very heavily backed each of the three times he has tried to win a Sheffield, and in this last essay there was quite a mint behind him. So much money has been lost on him that the “books” will have to be broken to recoup past outlays. Nearly 8,000 people witnessed the final. The four men left in were as fine a cluster of athletes as could be desired, Hutchens is without doubt the finest sprinter in the world. Maloney, of Melbourne, the winner, is a young man who has a great turn of speed, and can do even time, for he could easily have run the race in quicker time, and perhaps no previous foot-race in this Colony was won with such judgment as he displayed, and with a modesty that was pleasing to see. J, W. Byrnes, a native of New South Wales, may be styled the best hqrdle racer Hying, and as a runner and juniper hp has no compeer worth mention. It is worthy of qote fhat tl>e great English sprinter, who was satisfied with Iffs treatment, had'three colonials in front of him and did not eatch one of them.— ‘ Referee.’
