THE INTERPROVINCIAL DRAUGHTS MATCH.

The match on Saturday resulted in a somewhat decisive victory for the local players, as the following table will show

In the evening the visiting team and a few ; friends were entertained at dinner at the i Baldwin Hotel, a capital repast being provided by Host Reid. . Mr D. R. Hay (cap- - £afn of the Otago players) was in the chair, i with Mr Reese, M.H.R., as vice-chairman, i The Chairman said he thought the result of the match would prove beneficial to the; Interests of the game generally. The beauty ■ of draughts was that, however much the; game was played, one could never attain 1 perfection. He desired to return thanks to I the Canterbury players for coming such long distances at considerable trouble and expense to play the match ; and especial thanks were due to their captain, Mr Reese, for the time i and trouble he had taken in bringing the I team together. Those only who knew the i difficulties which surrounded efforts of thei kind, and especially when the players resided so widely apart, could fully appreciate the zeal and enthusiasm which must j have been displayed by him before his i efforts- were attended with success,—; (Cheers.) ! Mr Reese, M.H.R., in returning thanks, said that it was no easy matter, especially in these depressed times, to induee a number of players to come such long distances at their own expense to play a friendly match at draughts purely for love of the game; but, as the annual match had been fairly established he thought it would be a pity if under any circumstances it should fall through. When coming down.in the train he congratulated himself in being so successful as to get such a team together, for he felt confident it was the best team of draughts players that had evpr left Canterbury, so the Otago players might well feel prqud of beating them, and be fully believed ft would be the means of stirring up the Canterbury players to do their best to retrieve their lost laurels. He was very fond of the game, and would always be glad to promote its interests in any way in his power. Canterbury had got a thrashing, and it would make her practise more for her next meeting with Otago. The result of the matches so far was that Canterbury had won three out of the five played. '■
