AUCKLAND, March 23.

Robert Usher, hotelkeeper, who was injured at the Papakura railway station yesterday, died in the hospital this morning. Mi| R. Hobbs, M. H.R., telegraphs to the Auckland papers that the special settlers at Herekino are dissatisfied with the Government for not fulfilling their promises. Some are in want of food and have not tasted meat for a week, and many will certainly starve if immediate relief is not forthcoming. Mr Hobbs vouches for the truth of the statements, and says that the people’s position cannot be exaggerat d. Mr John Lundon has called a meeting of the gum-diggers at Papakura with a view to inducing them to join in a village settlement scheme.

WELLINGTON, March 23,

The evidence in the case of Shaw, Savill, and Co. v. Timaru Harbor Board was concluded this morning, and a verdict will probably be given this evening. Arthur Gordon was to-day committed for trial for robbery attended with assault.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 23,

At about 2 a.m. to-day a fire occurred at Willis’s printing office in Cathedral Square. The building was partially gutted, and considerable damage was done to the stock. Insurances: On the building, L7OO in the Norwich Union ; on the machinery and stock, L9OO in the South British, LBOO in the Liverpool, London and Globe, and LSOO in the Equitable. Thomas Lewis, a gunsmith, and a very old resident, was found drowned in the Avon this afternoon. Ho was missed last night, and is supposed to have walked into the river while drunk.

The body of John Thomas Rogers, eleven years, son of a laborer at Dallington, was found in Dudley Creek, at Bingsland, this morning. He was missed last night.
