Munkacsy’s great picture of “ Christ before Pilate ” remains in America, having been purchased by Mr John Wannamaker, of Philadelphia, who gave considerably over L 20.000 for it. This is the highest price ever paid for a modern painting, “ Can yon tell me what a smile is ? ” asked a gentleman of a little girl. " Yes, sir; ib Is the whisper of a laugh.”
