SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
By the Lady Jocelyn a member of a celebrated cricketing family has arrived on a visit to Auckland. This is M r Ernest Steel, brother of the celebrated players, A. G. and I). Q. Steel. Ife has unfortunately been compelled by the state of his health to seek a short sojourn in a milder climate than that of England. Mr Steel is a member of the Lancashire Cricket Chib, and has played in county matches on more than one occasion. The duration of his stay in Auckland is uncertain ; but it is hoped that his health will be improved, and that our colonial cricketers may have an opportunity of meeting him on the field.
There arc fifty-five entries for the Sydney Gold Cup. The holders of Meteor tickets in the Consolation Race intend to take action against the D.J.C. for the dividend alleged to be due to them. The match between Malone and O’Brien at Sydney, for the championship, resulted in Malone winning the first two events, viz,, the half-mile and the 1,000 yards.
Wo understand that Trenton has been nominated for the Sydney Gold Cup. The Meibomue Cricket Ground is now lighted by twenty-two electric lights, each of 2,000 candle-power. TAP AN HI RACES. To-day’s meeting was the most successful lic-ld bore for many years. The new stand was well filled. Seven started for the President’s Handicap, which Foul Play won after ,i good struggle with Lund Leaguer, Gold Dust being third. The Maiden Plate fell to Cathedral, Shula-Grau being second, and Davy third; won easily. The Tapanui Handicap fell to Amine, with Foul Play second and Violin third. THE V.11.C. AUTUMN MEETING.
