MR CHILDERS WINS A SEAT. LONDON. January 30.

The Right Hon. Hugh Childers has been elected by a large majority to represent one of the divisions of Edinburgh in the House of Commons.

The tbtal quantity df wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,730,000 quarters, an increase of 700,000 quarters during the week. New Zealand frozen mutton remains at 5d to sfd per lb.

New Zealand securities : Five per cent, unchanged; 4i per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 104 A ; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 102 A. The wool market is quieter, but steady. Nine thousand soven hundred bales were catalogued at yesterday's sales, and all descriptions of wool, except fine and finest qualities, elicited exceedingly good competition.

Consols have advanced to 100 L New Zealand securities and colonial breadstuffs are without alteration in value.

Tallow has fallen 6d per cwt. Australian beef tallow, fair average quality, Is at 25s 6d per cwt; do mutton, 2Gs. The Bank rate is 3 per cent., and the market rate lg per cent.

At to-day's wool sales some 11,000 bales were submitted. The market remains quiet, but steady. The present series of colonial wool auctions will close on Saturday week, February 13.

At the wool sales to-day prices were unchanged. The number of bales catalogued was 102,000, and of these 10,700 were withdrawu.

The M'heat market has lost its recent firmness, but the values have not changed. Ex warehouse is quoted at 365. Buyers refuse to offer more than 34s 6d for a Victorian cargo which is on the passage. No sales of off-coast cargoes are recorded. The flour market is dull. A parcel of Australian flour on the passage has been offered at 245. The Adelaide Smelting Company are offering LI 0,000 worth of debentures at 10 per cent. The French Government are accusing England and Germany of dividing the Pacific Islands between them.

The announcement that Mr Henniker Heaton will shortly be knighted is without foundation.

In connection with the French protectorate over the island of Raiatea, England is to enjoy equal commercial advantages with the French.

Good authorities on financial matters express an opinion that the Victorian loan will be floated at over 105. The' Economist' expects that the loan will be a decided success.

The Wine and Spirit Association of Great Britain are urging the Government to adopt an uniform duty of Is 6d per gallon on imported wines, with a maximum of 30deg. The Melbourne Tramway Company's loan is quoted nt a premium of nearly L 3. Prince Bismarck justifies the expulsion of Poles from Prussia on the ground that they are disloyal.
