THE MAILS.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—For the information of "Mercator" I beg to say thnt such a thing as a Sunday delivery of lettere ih London is absolutely unknown. Indeed, in this respect, it stands alone amongst the cities of the United Kingdom, aa mails received on Sunday are not even opened till early on Monday. The following is an extract from the 'Glasgow Herald,' received to-day, which should prove of interest to the trading community:—" The Government of New South Wales have made a contract with the Orient Steam Navigation Company for the conveyance of mails fortnightly between Sues and Australia, in connection with tho Indian mail service via Brindisi. The steamers of the Orient line will run alternately with those of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, so that there will be a regular weekly mail service by British packet between England and Australia. The first mail despatched from this country by the new service will leave London on Friday, December 7. I am, etc., G.P.O. Dunedin, December 21.
