THE CHRISTCHURCH UNEMPLOYED.

At the Oddfellows’Hall at Christchurch, which was crowded, a public meeting of the unemployed was held last night, presided over by the Mayor, and addressed by Messrs Montgomery, Holmes, Wynn Williams, Weston, M.H.R.’s., and several working men. Nearly 200 unemployed were present. It was stated that the number of men unemployed in Christchurch and suburbs was from 500 to 700. The following resolutions were unanimously carried:— That there are at present in Christchurch and its neighborhood a largo number of able working men who are, and have been for a long time, unable to obtain employment. That we, the working men of Canterbury, consider it is the bounden duty of Government to stop free and assisted immigration, also to take the money voted for immigration and Immediately make work for tho musses. That' the Mayor of Christchurch and the members of tho House of Representatives present at this meeting, with delegates Ohoseti by the working men, wait upon tho Minister of Public Works to urge tlpob him the necessity of procuring work for tho unemployed in Christchurch and its neighborhood. That all those who are out of employment attend at tho City Council Chambers to subscribe their names to a document, stating the number in their families, their occupations, and the time they have been out of employment.
