POLICEMEN AS ELECTIONEERING AGENTS.
The Auckland 'Stax* publishes the following contribution to the Kidd-cum-Mahon case
1 see our pay is to be reduced another sixpence. However, Ormond has kindly consented to look after us, and has promised that next session he will do all that is possible to better our condition in pay and promotion. I hear that Mr W, C. Smith Is going to oppose him. I sincerely trust he won’t, for now that Mr Ormond has joined the Grey party both body and soul, he is the only man in New Zealand that can put the other lot outand so do something for ua. Mr Smith is a very clever yonng man, and has plenty of time to enter into political life, and! am sure he; thinks too much ef his party to oppose its.leader at a very important time for eVeryOne. Mr Buchanan is sure to get in for Napier. .Mr Ormond wiU help him all he can, Mr Russell will follow Mr Ormond if he; gets in for Waipawa. You will see what a complete smash will be made of the Government party in this Province. I believe you are one of Mr Smith’s best friends, and 1 think yon would be doing ns all an everlasting favor if you could induce him to withomw. and t exmblp Mr Ormond to do what he can for Up this session or next. Mr Ormond and thbjHon. I. N, Wilson have also pronusedto oet atrest our claims to vote, aodM believe we will be abb to do so next election. However, you and the brothers Nathan, had better send in yOur claims to be on the roll under section 2 of. the Elections' Act, 1879, as I hayedone. So you will see Mr Smith at onto, And cause him to retire, , and if you succeed send me a “ cofiect” telegram to that effect at once. In any case I hope you will write me a long letter ,on the subject. It isnecessary/now that Mr Ormond lias ptonaised to be onr friend and the leader of pur party, we should try and do everything for him. I feel sore that Mr Ormond will ,-some. ■ day make amicable amends for, , the offence he unwittingly gave Mr . Smitfoir-Yours very truly, M. J; Mahon ;
