DROWNING OF MR THOMAS F. JONES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —la your report in last night'a issue of the sad death of Mr Jones, you do me an injustice in stating that owing to fright I made no efforts to rescue tbe body, As this statement is likely to cause aa erroneous impression in the minds of the public, you will allow me to state that on ceming to the water's edge for the purpose of having my customary bath, I observed the dead body bting tossed abcut by the breakers at a considerable distance, thus necessitating a swim at great personal mk in order to reach the body. Not being an experienced swimmer, and noticing a Bpring-cart at the entrance of the beach, I made all possible haste to procure assistance, but tbe driver refuting, and nobody ehe being about owing to the early hour, I proceeded to the Ktnsißgton police station and reported the matter to the officer in charge. From this statement you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that no ''person placed ia similar circumstances as myself could have acted differently or more promptly in the matter.—l am, etc., Louis Rother,

Dunedir, Febru ry 8. [ The information contained in cur yester> day'? paragraph was obtained from the police report. Mr Rather assures us that wm\n he saw the body it was at such a distance from the shore that it wai quits hopeless for one pjrson, however good a swimmer be might be, to have attempted to recover it. We understand that the ages of Mr Jones's children were overstated, the youngest being about eight, and iha eldest fifteen. [Ed. E.S.]
