THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

There was a large attendance of members at yesterday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held for the purpose of electing a representative for the Harbor Board, in the place of Mr Tewsloy resigaed. Mr EB. Cargill occupied the chair. The Chaiiijun stated the object of the meeting, say in;; that Mr Tewaley had, as they were all sorry to learn, been obliged to resign in consequence of ill health. He was sure tiey were all at one in entertaining a feeling of very great regret at the cause of Mr Tewaley's resignation, and also in recognising the very earnest services ho had rendered whilst he had represented the Chamber on the Harbor Board. In proceoding to elect someone in Mr Tewsley's place, he thought it would only be fitting that the Chamber should record by resolutioa its appreciation of the services rendered by him, and of the great y,?al he had shown in promoting the business of the Harbor Board while he was representative for the Chamber. He understood thero was a very unanimous feeling that Mr Walcott should be elected as his successor. They had some knowledge of that gentleman through the active and intelligent interest he had taken in everything connected with the Chamber. Mr Walcott had had a very extensive experience in shipping matters, and he (the chairman) did not think they could find amongst their number anyone more fitted to fill the position than the gentleman named. He had very great pleasure in proposing that Mr Walcott should be elected the representative of the Chamber on the Harbor Board.

Mr Rattray seconded the motion, saying he thought that if the Chamber elected Mr Walcott, it would bo thoroughly represented on the Board. They were all aware of the ability and experience which Mr Walcott possessed. The motion was put and carried unanimously.

Mr Wat/jtt said he had to thank the members of the Chamber for the honor they had done him in uuanimously electing him their representative. Ho could not accept the very flattering terms in which they had spoken of him, and he was afraid he would be found a very unworthy successor to the late Chairman of the Harhor Boaid and the representative of that Clumber. All that he would promise was that he would to th? best of his ability regard the intei-ests of the Chamber while ho was their representative on t ie Harbor Board. Mr Wkih; next moved—" That the Chamber desires to record its thatik3 to Mr Tewsley for his able representation of the Chamber on the Harbor Board, and its deep regret at the circumstances which have led to his resignation ; aud that the Chairman, Mr Rattray, and the Secretary be appointed a eub-committcc to prepare a letter transmitting this resolution to Mr Tewsley." Mr -Jami'>; Mills seconded the resolution, and he thought the matter could not be left in bettor hands than in those of the gentlemen mimed.

Mr H. S. Fish desired to support the motion, and to express his strong feeling of admiration of the action Mr Tewsley had taken aM the representative of the Chamber on the Harbor Board. It was, he thought, no diNcrmrtcHy to Mr \V ilcott to fay that liny ilji] not expect ao good a representative: in hii» i\< they had had in Mr Tow.sley, for Mi Tewiley had been so longcinncoted with the Board, and understood its working from its institution to the present time. Mr Te.wsloy had given so much time to the B.ianl that ho imint have naeiilieed his own inleruntH in doing ho, and it wan (/ratifying to find a gentleman willing, a.s Mr Towaley had been, to sacrifice his own interests in or ler to conserve tho.ie of the public. They muit all regret the lors of Mr Tewsley as their representative on the Harbor Hoard, and the l"ss wan doubly to be regretted in view of the eauno which hail led to his resignation. The motion was adopted unanimously.
