Captain Inglis returned thanks iu suitable terms. The following telegram was received last evening by the secretary of the Dunediu Chamber of Commerce (Mr J. S. Webb) from Mr W. D. Stewart, M.H.R. :~" Wellington, 30th September.—Have arranged with Minister of Justice to introduce Debtors and Creditors Amendment Act as Government Bill, to nave delay. I have prepared several other amendments, and will send you Bill when printed." The anniversary of the Dundas street Primitive Methodist school was celebrated at the school-house last night, when about 150 persons were pre>ent. The chair was taken by the Rev. J. Guy, and addresses were delivered by the Rev. J. U. Davis and J Ward, and Mr S. Fuller, superintendent of the school. The report read by the secretary showed that during the fourteen months the school had been iu existence the number of pupils had increased from 16 to 105, and the number of teachers from seven to tifteon. It waa moved by Cr Vickery that answer should be made that tho level of the road on whioh the tram would run was the crown of Albert road but it was pointed out that the Council were bound by their agreement to supply a plan of the levels, and before that could be done notice required to be given. Ultimntely it was agreed, by the Mayor's casting vot*, to obtain a copy of the agreement befo.o taking any further steps.—Mr Eager|a , esigoation as auditor was accepted ; and it as resolved to" expend no more money i\ yond working expemc?, until the bank v rdraft was cleared off.

By our shipping column it will be seen that the ship Benares was taken out to sea I in perfect safety this aftornoon. There was a very good attendance at Professor Jonas'a Ghost entertainment at the Garrison Hall last evening. To-night there will be no performance, preparations having to be made for Thursday evening's entertainment in aid of tho Miaseß Wilson. In connection with this latter wo may state that the final rehearaal of " Eva" last night passed off very satisfactorily. The story told by our morning contemporaries that a storekeeper named Johnstone, living at Ravensbourne, had attempted to commit suicide last night by jumping into the water, bmt had been prevented from carrying out his object by a dog, has no foundation in faot. The man, finding that he was about to be arrested for being drunk, had jumped over the railway line into the water, but, not finding this a congenial place of shelter, sow sought terra firma Ho had only recently started business, but, not finding it very lucrative, bad been somewhat low-spirited.
