In answer to a telegram to Nelson asking particulars concerning the alleged discovery of a quarry of slate near that city, the reply isA sample is not worth sending. Your Otago Company’s slate very superior. Will send when good.” At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Port Chalmers, this forenoon, before Mr T. A. Mansford, R.M., Thomas Sims and William Barr were each fined 5s for drunkenness; Henry Stevens, for a similar offence, was fined 10s, with the alternative of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. A second charge of having no visible means of support was preferred against him, and he was remanded until' to-morrow.
