Stealing Jewellery.— James W r rixon tUiae Smith, was charged with stealing at Blueskiu on July 4, a box containing a pair of gold earrings, a gold chain, a locket, and a brooch, the property of David Carey.— Edwin Carey, a publican at Blueskin, stated that on the morning of the 4th inst. he was called upstairs by his brother David. On going up he found his brother with the prisoner, and heard his brother accuse Erisoner of having stolen his jewellery. His rother put his hand in prisoner’s left hand pocket, and pulled out a gold chain, whereupon witness went for the police.—George Farmer gave corroborative evidence,— BUen Carey identified the jewellery produced as her property. It was in a workbox in her bedroom on the 3rd inst., ami ■he missed it next morning. Prisoner slept in a room opposite her bedroom on the 3rd. —David Carey, publican, stated that after bis wife bad gone down stairs on the morning of the 4th he noticed prisoner in the bedroom, Witness -was in bed and seeing prisoner asked him what ho wanted. He ■aid, “Oh, beg pardon,” and walked out. Shor’ly afterwards his wife reported to him the loss of the jewellery, and he went to prisoner and told him that if he gave them np he would say nothing about the matter. —lnspector Mallard : You should not have done that. No person has a right to hold out a threat to a prisoner.—Witness continued : On searching the prisoner he found the locket and chain in his pocket. The other jewellery was found concealed under a mattrass in the prisoner’s bedroom. When he told prisoner that if he gave up the jewellery he would say nothing about it, prisoner denied all knowledge of the matter.— Prisoner was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. An Undutiful Child.— Frank M ‘Donald, nine years old, admitted stealing 1.4 10s on July 10, the property of Caroline M‘Donald. —lnspector Mallard stated that the lad had been adopted by Mrs M‘Donald since childhood. He stopped out at night, and was quite uncontrollable. The child had been brought before the Court with a view of having him sent to the Industrial School.— Mrs M‘Doraid stated that about two years ago the accused kept company with a number of scapegraces, but until lately had behaved much better. In the present instance he abstracted the money, and spent it in Juvenile delicacies in different shops.—He was sent to the Industrial School for six years, and ordered to be educated in the Congregational religion, Saturday, July 14.
