MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before E, ff. Ward, and R. H. Leary, Esqs., J.P.’s) SHIP DESERTION. William Richardson pleaded guilty to a charge of deserting from the ship Ironsides at Bluff harbour, and was ordered to be scut back again. LUNACY. John Mullane, remanded for medical examination, was again brought up and discharged in accordance with medical certificates produced. ASSAULT, Ccorge Williams appeared, on summons, charged with having assaulted Robert MarBhaifontbe24thinst. MrHaggittappearedfor complainant, and Mr Stout for defendant. Complainant said that on the day in question, while on his way from Dunedin to line Hill, defendant assaulted him. He bad not at any time off ended defendant, or given him any reason for behaving as he did. Defendant deliberately came up, laid hold of him, ami shook him," at the same time using threatening language. John White and Michael Moore said they were present when the assault was committed. Williams took hold of Marshall, shook him, and then both fell and rolled in the bush. The defendant appeared to be under the influence of liquor, aid complainant endeavoured to get away from him- When Marshall got up from the ground, his face was bleeding freely, John Brown said Marshall was riding along quietly on his dray, when defendant came up and put his hand on complainant’s shoulder, apparently as if be was going to ask him to have a drink. Marshall then stood up brandishing a stick over defendant. He did not hear words used by either party, bub complainant seemed excited. Defendant was fined 40s and costs. BREACH OF 'IHE CITY BYE-LAWS, George Deariug and Richard Spence were chargetf, on the information of the Inspector of Nuisances, with having allowed unclean water to pass from their premises, in Walker street, on to the public street, and fined 2s 6d each with costs.
