NEW ZEALAND AT THE VIENNA EXHIBITION.

The Colony is likely to be well represented at the Vienna Exhibition. The Post informs us, that, acting upon a highly suggestive and valuable report sent in by Dr Hector, the Government have decided on obtaining, direct from producers and manufacturers, specimens for exhibition, so that the Colony, and not merely individuals, willbe represented upon an intelligent, comprehensive plan, the individuals at the same lime receiving all the credit for the production of the articles. In cases where manufacturers might not be inclined to trouble themselves in the matter, samples have been ordered, and will be paid for—a emu of LI 00 Vicing considered more than sufficient to cover this outlay. By the Halcionc was sent home IScwt flax, portions of which will be manufactured into sundry articles, such as sheeting, towelling, canvas, scrim, sacking, etc. The Bank of New Zealand have been requested to obtain samples of alluvial gold, each of one ounce weight, from all the different fields of the Colony. Besides these, there will be quartz specimens from the various claims, and specimens of silver in various stages. This collection will be cempb ted by an entire set of plans and sections illustrating mines at the Thames, and in other parts of the Colony. Specimens of Dun Mountain ore will be sent. The Taranaki steel will be represented, Mr Smith, the Government armorer, being engaged in making bars of the metal. Our coal mines will not be passed over, large blocks of two feet cubic measurement being obtained from the various coal mines. The gigantic mea will not be forgotten, Dr Haast, of Christchurch, undertaking to get ready a handsome specimen, which will be placed as a centre piece in the space allotted to New Zealand. In the matter of wool we cannot say what will be aei-it, as that will depend upon the prize exhibits at the Canterbury i*how. In woollen goods, Messrs Webley, of Nelson, and Messrs Burns of Otago are manufacturing articles specially for exhibition, in cloths, plaids, hosiery, etc. In phonnium tenax, selections of nativedressed flax will be sent, also coils of rope, twines, lines, etc., from the three mills belonging to Mr Lloyd, Mr Lemon, and Mr Bevan. In timbers, polished sections and slabs of all kinds of furniture woods of large sizes arc being prepared, and Mr Seanfert, of Auckland, has orders for an ornamental table, with the different New Zealand woods inlaid. Samples of doors and sashes from both Auckland and Otago have also been obtained. The representation of whalebone, pawa shells, hides, tallow, and leather, will be left in the hands of tlie local committees. One general map of the Colony, showing the roads, railways, and lines of telegraph existing, and in course of construction, is being prepared, also maps of each province, showing the topographical features of each, the land settled, and that available for settlement. A complete set of photographic views of both the North and Middle islands, partly by Mr Mundy and partly by Mr Travers, have also been got ready. Besides all those, a complete sot of New Zealand publications, giving statistics, .and including various works on natural history and scientific research, have been arranged, and hand, snmely bound together for the Exhilfiticai. The Colonial regulations gazetted wme time ago regarding cheeses and perishable articles have also been relaxed, and such goods need not first be sent to the Christchurch Exhibition. We ate therefore as yet quite in the dark as to what exhibits of this nature will be sent, if any. In wool and machinedressed fibre the prize exhibits of Canterbury will alone be sent.
