(from orevtlle’s telegram company, reuter’s agents.) Hokitika, Oct. 7. The champion pedestrian sports took place on Saturday. The 100 yards race was won by Hewitt, Twohill being second, and Rankin third; the 200 yards race (for which ten started) by Pentecost, with Rankin second, and Twohill third ; the 440 yards hurdle race by Twohill, who beat Harris — How being third ; the mile race by Hewitt, Hearne being second. In the competition for the ladies’ challenge cup, Volunteer Skene made 145 points, Ensign Forsyth 139, and Corporal Learmonth 138, out of a possible 180. George Pitt, alias Smith, has been committed for tidal for cruelly illtreating a horse by stabbing it in sixteen places. He says he was stuck up. The Rev. Mr Gow, minister elect of St. Andrew’s, is a passenger for Dunedin by the Tararua. Wellington, Oct. 9, Mr Joshua Strange Williams is gazetted Registrar-General of Land.
