MISCELLANEOUS.
Mr Childers has been travelling in Italy. His health is reported to be much improved. The annual meeting of the Hoyal Agricultural Society was held this year at Wolverhampton. Mr Alderman Durdin has been nominated for the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin for 1872. Nearly 2000 competitors entered for the Queen’s Prize at Wimbledon won by Ensign Humphrey. The P. and 0. Company are having built several steamers adapted for passing through the Suez Canal. "The number of female physicians in England is increasing. The report submitted at the seventh annual meeting of the Female Medical Society, London, on July 27, stated that during the seventh session ninety-eight ladies had availed themselves of the society’s Obstetrical College. Fifty one of these were single, twenty-six married, and twenty-one widowed. Among the students were a large proportion of the relatives, wives, or widows of clergymen or medical men. Most of them attended the lectures with a view to practising as skilled midwives. Two ladies who were recommended by the committee for responsible professional positions in connection with the Biro ingham Lying-in Hospital, have satisfacto-ily discharged those duties for more than two years. Two of the past students of the society, Miss Thorne and Mbs Matilda Chaplin, are now studying for the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Edinburgh, and have considerably distinguished themselves in the examination here. Addresses were delivered by the chairman, Dr Edmunds, and other gentlemen. It was also resolved that in view of the probable opening of the Edinburgh University to lady students, the society should confine itself to the establishment of a high-class school of obstetrics for women. The romance of history is strangely exemplified in the very manner by which the Commons have been able to coerce the Lords. The control of the army commissions was clamored for by the famous long Parliament of 1G42, and it was on the precise point whether the right of making appointments should be vested in the House or the Crown that the smouldering civil war ultimately blazed out. The gentry of England rallied round the King’s standard to defend that primary principle of royalty, and they were successful too in the long run, for the privilege was attached to the Crown at the Restoration, and has steadily adhered to it since. By a silent hut revolutionary change the Crown is now possessed by the Commons ; royalty is used by the Premier of the day much as the Mayors of the Palace used the puppet Kings of France ; or as Simon de Montfort, instead of slaying King Henry, placed him in the front rank of the battle and displayed his standard over insurgent columns. The defeat of the Republicans of the seventeenth century means the success of the Liberals of the nineteenth. Had Vane and Fleetwood succeeded in vesting the power of the sword in Parliament, Mr Gladstone must have proceeded in this case by bill; as it is, he wields the prerogative of the Crown, and can act with the directness of despotism and democracy. For extremes meet. The Times docs not pay a very high compliment to the English voluntee s for their performances at the last Wimbledon review. It says some of the mistakes which occurred could only find a parallel iu the battle of Dorking ; and this is the manner in which a few of them are spoken of : —“ln front of the Grand Stand one of the best known and coolest-headed of the metropolitan regiments whose adjutant, moreover, has lately published an admirable collection of lectures addressed by him to the men of his corps—so far forgot their whereabouts in the excitement of the moment as to receive their own protecting cavalry with a volley, a couple of men, moreover, deliberately turning round and firing again after the cavalry had passed to the rear. But the most extraordinary feat of arms was that of a young but crack corps, which counts probably more efficients than any other in the service. On the emmy’s cavalry retiring ip some disorder and with very insufficient speed across the Common, it was overtaken by the Royal Hone Artillery with Lancers in support, upon whom it proceeded with utmost sang-froid to open fire from its rallying squares. This was too much for military flesh and blood to stand, and accordingly the Artillery, without allowing further time, opened tire from the battery just as if the Volunteers had not beep there, though the distance between the riflemen and the muzzle of the guns could have bee , hut a very few paces. This significant hint was not lost upon the Volunteers, who retired at the double for the remainder of the distance, a staff officer riding up, after this event, to wave them hack with ail Imaginable speed.
“ Are these pure canaries ?” asked a young gentleman, who was negooiating for a gift for his fair. “Yes sir,” said the dealer, confidentially, “ I raised them ere birds from Canary seed.”
