EXPENSIVE BUSES

MAYOR'S COMPLAINT

"There has been a certain amount of criticism about the type of bus we have been purchasing recently, but the prices of the buses we would all like to buy are too prohibitive," said the Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) at the final 1945 meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council on Thursday. "The buses we are putting on are a third of the cost of the imported English jobs. We are wise to go along quietly and just not pay for marking time. I feel there are going to be big developments in transport within the next 12 months.

"Much difficulty has been experienced during the past year in getting work done, and now we are able to do it, apparently prices are going to be too high," said Mr. Wise. The council had only a certain amount of money for the work which required to be done, and if prices generally were going to be comparable to the two tenders received for the storm-water drainage system, the work would have to be delayed. The Mayor expressed his thanks to the councillors, the staff, and particularly to the Town Clerk, Mr. J. P. McDavitt, for their assistance and co-operation during the year. "This council has always been a harmonious body," said Councillor S. Shearer, in reply. "We don't need to fight to get the things we want." On behalf of "other councillors he expressed his best wishes to the Mayor and Mayoress during the festive season. The Town Clerk replied on behalf of the staff. '
