THE ATOMIC AGE
EFFECT ON THE NAVY
FAR-REACHING CHANGES PREDICTED
Rec. 1.50 p.m.
LONDON, Dec. 20,
The change from the present navy to the atomic age would be as great as that from sail to steam. This belief was expressed by the Third Sea Lord, Rear-Admiral C. S. Daniel, in a speech at the launching of the Tiger class cruiser Blake.
He added that there was nothing more expensive than an obsolete navy, but construction would necessarily be on a small scale during the. next two or three years. "We have entered the atomic era, which most certainly will have a far-reaching effect on naval construction," he said. "I believe we f shall find one day that we are in a' position to start on a radical new naval construction programme."
