CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN

Britain's . Minister for Health, Mr. ! Aneurin Bevan, who is leader of the "Share Your Home" campaign, has given shelter in his home to his relations. . "This,". says a Sunday paper, which is a staunch supporter of Mr. Bevan, "is a shining example of his -unselfish austerity. Mr. Bevan has done only what he asks others to do—to help avert distress this winter by offering accommodation to people in need." Mr. Bevan says that if distress is to be avoided this winter, accommodation must be found for at least 750,000 families. At present the campaign is voluntary, but if this is not satisfactory then it may be necessary to introduce stern billeting regulations for reouisitioning "half homes." " Since the campaign opened a few days ago, however, there has been a rush in some areas by people offering to share their homes. The Archbishop of York, Dr. Garbfitt, has three families living in his pp.lace. Scared by the prospect of compulsory home-sharing, many owners of big country houses are making haste to sell. . A West End estate agent said that v/hile houses were practically unprocurable a few weeks ago, there is now a large number offered for sale. A woman writer in a London journal offers 10 rules for sharing a home. She says it need not be a "depressing, cramping experience; it may be a panacea for chronic loneliness ana the start of a b3autiful friendship. "But beware of the kitchen, she says. "The Chinese sign for discord is a picture of two women under one roof Two women in one kitchen is an even more fruitful source of trouble." ■
