OBITUARY
MR. CHARLES PAYNE
P.A. DUNEDIN, This Day. The death has occurred in Christchurch at the age of 78 of Mr. Charles Joseph Payne, of Dunedin, a leading barrister and solicitor, and one whose name was familiar in bowling circles throughout the Dominion.
He was born in South Australia, and in 1896 became partner with the late Mr. W. iJownie Stewart, father of the Hon. Downie Stewart, in the firm of Stewart and Payne. He soon earned a reputation as a sound jurist and in later years appeared before the Court of Appeal on a number of occasions. Though interested in many forms of sport, he was chiefly known as a bowler and was the first champion of champions of the Dunedin centre, a distinction he gained in the 1908-9 season. He was president of the original New Zealand Bowling Association in 1906, and in 1928-30 was elected president of the present New Zealand Bowling Association. He made frequent trips to Australia, where among his close friends were the Test cricketers Warwick Armstrong, and Hugh Trumble. He i§ survived by his wife, three daughters, and five sons.
