STATE OF TRAM TRACKS
PURCHASE OF CABLE CAR
Concern was expressed at a meeting of the executive committee of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association this week over the progressive deterioration of tram tracks. While full allowance was made for past and present difficulties in regard to labour and material, it was felt that the position should not be permitted to drift. In some parts of the city the crumbling at the rails was such as to be a serious menace to the safety of both vehicles and pedestrians. The committee decided to urge upon the council that maintenance work in this direction should be undertaken without xfurther delay. . The position regarding the cable cars serving the western suburbs was also discussed, and the opinion was ex : pressed that the cable car system should be incorporated into the municipal service, but not at a cost which would throw an inequitable burden, upon the ratepayers. The purchase price, if any, should be upon the basis of the present value of the assets, without relation to any uncertain propective value.
