APPEAL NEXT YEAR

PETONE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Although the official campaign has not been launched, £228 towards the Petone Borough's scheme to erect a £40,000 community centre as a. war memorial, has already been collected in subscriptions and donations. The official campaign will consist of six money-raising projects—a queen carnival early in the New Year, to conclude with an Easter carnival on the recreation ground; a direct approach to industrial and business firms, an individual canvass of every household in the borough, an art union after other activities have been finalised, and street and other entertainments on Friday nights.

The official campaign is to commence in January. It has been suggested that householders should be asked to make a weekly contribution as an alternative to a lump sum.

A tentative plan showing the amenities which the committee hopes to include in the project has been on display in Petone for some time. The centre will consist of only one building of two storeys. It contains a central stadium, with floor and gallery accommodation for 2500 people, and a stage 40ft deep, making it suitable for large theatrical shows. In addition, the stadium will be suitable for indoor games and contests, horticultural shows, dances, and concerts.

A little theatre, seating about 300, for repertory productions and other entertainments, a wrestling gymnasium, boxing gymnasium, community lounge, youth games lounge, women's clubrooms, lodge meeting hall, metal and carpentry workshop, arts and crafts workshop, two lecture rooms, a band room, a committee room, nursery, and outside children's play area, are provided for in the plan.
