The balance-sheet of the Hank of New South Wales shows a further Increase of £14,537,000 during the year ended September SO. and has now reached a record total of £223,104,000. Ha id the president, the Hon. Sir Frederick 11. Tout, M.L.C., at the annual general meeting held in Sydney yesterday. Of this amount the chief item, deposits. bills payable, etc., rose £]■ 1.202,000 to the sum of £200,540,000. On the assets side of the balance-sheet, the total of liquid assets, £144,008.000, increased .tl2,l(!4,000 during the year. The largest single item was tlie special account with the Commonwealth Brink, which rose £1^.375,000 to a total of £01,354,000. This account was created originally under National Security Regulations as a special wartime deposit account and was made .statutory by the recent hanking legislation. Its purpose- was to regulate the size of bank funds available for investment. Holdings in fJovcrnment sccuTltfos stand at £33,173,000, and showed only a small rise in the year. Short-dated Treasury bills, on the other hand, fell by £3,72n,000 to £1(5,500,000. Coin, legal tender notes, and cash balances rose £1,448,000, and now totalled £10.383,000. "An encouraging sign of a return to private business activity is the expansion of £2,154,000 in loans and advances, which now stand at I £07,430,000," said the president. "This is a welcome reversal of wartime trends. There i.s no change in the sum standing against bank premises. Contingent liabilities, £7,104,000. are £218,000 higher on the year. The balance of the year's profit, £552,007, is some £1858 'higher than last year, and flic amount carried forward, £317,131, is £20,107 higher."
