TWO APPOINTMENTS

PA DUNEDIN, November 30. The University of New Zealand has approved of appointments to vacant chairs of history and philosophy at the University of Otago. The new Professor of History is Dr. William Parker Morrell. M.A. (N.Z.), Ph.D. (Oxon). Dr. David Daiches Raphael, M.A. (Oxon), Ph.D. (Oxon) has been appointed to the chair of philosophy. Dr. Morrell, who is 45 years of age, was born at Auckland, and is at present reader in history at the University of London. He graduated from Otago ■with his M.A., taking first class honours in history and in languages and literature. His degree of Ph.D. was gained at Oxford. From 1927 to 1930 he was Beit lecturer in colonial history at Oxford, also undertaking tutorial work for Balliol and other colleges, and since 1930 he has been reader in history at the University of London. He is a son of the late Mr. W. J. Morrell, former rector of the Otago Boys' High School. .. Dr. Raphael is British by nationality and his age is 29. He took his M.A. degree at Oxford with first class honours m classical moderations and literae humaniores, and his degree of Ph.D. at Oxford in 1940. He studied at Liverpool Collegiate School from 1927 to 1934 and was at Oxford from 1934 to 1938. From 1938 to 1940 he taught philosophy to undergraduates at Oxford, and for part of 1940 till he joined the army he was temporarily in charge of all philosophy tuition at Oriel College, Oxford. After his service in the army in 1941 he was seconded to the Ministry of Labour and National Service, where he is at present employed. His wife is assistant lecturer in French at London University.
