MUFTI ALLOWANCE

HIGH COST OF CLOTHING

In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr. G. F. Sim (National, Rbtorua) asked the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) whether he would give consideration to increasing the mufti allowance to returned servicemen from £25 to a sum more in keeping with present-day costs. He said that a recent Service newspaper had stated that from inquiries made in 11 main centres the cost of a minimum civilian outfit varied from £42 to £58, the average being £47.

The Minister said that the stabilisation policy of the Government was to keep price levels down, and for that purpose subsidies had been made available to ensure that prices were maintained, as far as possible, at the level ruling in 1942.
