MONEY TO SPEND

TROOPS FOR BRITAIN

A suggested remission of up to £25 to New Zealand servicemen visiting Great Britain over and above the amount they may receive in the course of a year from the Dominion was made by Mr. C. G. E. Harker (National Waipawa) when questioning the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Minister replied that the remittance that overseas servicemen could receive was £40 a year. When arrangements were made for New Zealand servicemen to go to Britain on furlough a report was obtained from the Army Department, and the advice was that servicemen in the Middle East proceeding on leave to the United Kingdom had sufficient credit in their paybooks enabling them to obtain reasonable advances against pay. Free rail fares were being provided, and the only expenditure the soldiers would be called on to meet would be relatively small. The Government, after careful consideration, came to the conclusion that the arrangements were satisfactory. "If circumstances warranted an increase in the remittance, that would be done. On the present evidence, however, the £40 provided was ample.
