MANY GORSE FIRES
After a fairly busy time yesterday afternoon and evening, the Wellington Fire Brigade had a quieter time today, being called out only to two justifiable false alarms. Yesterday's fires illustrated the danger of dry gorse and grass. At 3.10 p.m. a call was received to Parkvale Road. Karori, where gorse was ablaze. One machine from Northland attended and beaters were used to extinguish the flames. At 8 p.m. a machine from the Central Station attended a fire among rubbish at the corner of Jessie and Tory Streets. Bucket pumps were used. At 8.37 p.m. a machine from Miramar was called out to extinguish a gorse fire in Monorgan Road, near Scots College. At 11.20 p.m. three machines were called out to deal with a grass fire at Palmer Head. The fire had a good hold and five leads of hose were used before it was extinguished.
