GETTING ATOMIC BOMB

RUSSIANS' BIG EFFORT

The Russians are actively'pursuing atomic bomb research with the assistance of German scientists, equipment, and data, according to the acting director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Berlin; Dr. Guenther Hillmann. He predicted that the Russians would evolve their own atomic bomb within * two years.

The Russians have been offering German scientists, including himself, lucrative salaries to go to Russia and wprk on atomic development. Many had accepted, principally because the Americans forbade all scientific research in their zone.

Dr. Hillmann added that the Russians were working extremely hard on the atomic bomb, and seeking the slightest information. They had removed all the equipment here before the Americans took over the zone. They even collected floor sweepings as clues to their experiments; More:and more German scientists are agreeing to work for the Soviet, not because' they are Russophiles, but because the restrictive policies of the British and Americans drove them into the arms of the Russians, who encouraged free research and thus reaped the full benefit of German knowledge.
