SHOESHINE BOYS

ROME, October 28.
The' Pope granted a special audience to 1700 of Rome's shoeshine boys. Some of the boys were cleaned and dressed up for the occasion, others were ragged and barefooted. The Pope addressed the boys for 20 minutes, after which they sang a special shoeshine anthem, known as "The, Village Hymn." Some of these boys are reported to hava made small-fortunes shining shoes for Allied soldiers.; Afewhaye even been seen riding .expensive hired horses round the Pincio Gardens, the Hyde Park of Rome.
