FAR EAST CAPTIVES

N.Z. STAFF DISPATCHED

A small number of Army officers and n.c.o.s has been sent from New Zealand to join the, United Kingdom and Australian staff concerned with the recovery and repatriation of Allied prisoners of war and interned civilians in the Far East, says the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones). The duties of the New Zealand staff are primarily to locate and attend to the needs of New Zealanders and other prisoners of war and internees whose next-of-kin are at present in New Zealand, and to furnish reports giving names, physical condition, and movements of those who are recovered. They will also make every effort to gain all possible information about missing New Zealanders.

The New Zealand staff consists of Brigadier G. H. Clifton, who has gone to Manila for duty there and in Japan, Major A. E. Sanft, Captain I. C. Young, Lieutenants R. Tapper and R. P. Evans, W. 0.1 A. S. Herrick, and Sergeants D. Bryce, B. M. Morris, and L. A. Jamieson, all of whom will work in different parts of the South-east Asia Area, in co-operation with members of the United Kingdom and Australian staffs. The New Zealand Army representatives in Malaya will act in conjuncj tion with the R.N.Z.A.F. Reception and Evacuation Centre at Singapore.
