WHARVES & SHIPS
ACCESS RESTORED
REGULATIONS REVOKED
Access to wharves and ships will not in future be restricted by the police. This news, welcome to many Wellingtonians whose waterfront wanderings were curtailed by war, was contained in a statement made last evening by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) on the revocation of emergency regulations.
"It is not possible immediately to revoke the Shipping Safety Emergency Regulations, under which action fs taken to ensure the security of ships and wharves, and under an amendment to which the Naval Board has power to control the movement of small craft," said Mr. Fraser. "It is possible now to dispense with the special security precautions which have been maintained over wharvds and ships and in future access to wharves and ships will not be restricted by the police. "It" will be essential in the meantime, however, to retain the Shipping Safety Emergency Regulations, under which vessels are prohibited from entering certain areas. This restriction is in the interests of the ships themselves, as they are intended to ensure that the vessels do not unwittingly jeopardise themselves by entering minefields and other dangerous areas. All these areas are being cleared as rapidly as possible, and as soon as this is done, the regulations will be revoked and the control removed."
