NEW ZEALANDER WINS AT CHESS

SYDNEY, September 4. K. G. "Wade, the New Zealand champion, who arrived after the tournament had opened, brillkmtly defeated A. G Shoebridge, New South Wales, in the first round of the Australian allchampions chess tournament played last night. The Australian Chess Federation has decided to confer the title of Australian champion on the winner of the tournament. The field is the strongest ever assembled in Australia.

Two champions were defeated in the first round. G. Koshnitsky, the holder, was checkmated by C. G. Watson, a former champion, and C. J. S. Purdy defeated S. Lazare, the Victorian champion, in a game of 75 moves.
