LIQUOR ON VJ DAY
INDISCRIMINATE SALE
The indiscriminate sales by hotel licensees on VJ Day of bottles of liquor which were ooenly consumed on the main streets by young and old was referred to in the police report submitted to the quarterly meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee yesterday afternoon.
The bottles were afterwards thrown on the streets, many being broken and thereby becoming a danger to pedestrians and motor-vehicles. Many young persons in their "teens and well under 21 years of age were seen under the influence of liquor as a result of the uncontrolled sales of bottled liquor, and the authorities responsible for law and order on the two days concerned received absolutely no assistance from the licensees of the hotels, the report continued. Otherwise the conduct of the hotels during the past quarter had on the whole been satisfactory.
